Surfing China

Surfing China

In 2009 I had the pleasure of competing in the surfing Hainan open. I flew 1 hour from Guangzhou to Sanya, which is the capital of the Chinese province of Hainan (population 11 million and still uncrowded).

Hainan known by many, as China's Hawaii, due to the island lifestyle, palm trees, holiday makers, lots of floral prints, not to mention beautiful long pristine beaches. Yes thats right, China has beautiful beaches. Including, for those lucky enough to experience, perfect sand bottom point breaks with reeling waves.

I was one of those very lucky people who got to experience what the island of Hainan had to offer. Attached is the website of surfing Hainan, Brendan and Dahai run the show down there and most of all they're passionate about surfing.

Helen Musslewhite

Today I was inspired by UK based paper artist Helen Musslewhite.

This is what Helen says about her work.....

By the use of bold colour, strong graphic line and familiar images I create highly individual and visually appealing pieces of art that make an instant impact. My work has a distinctive hand crafted quality that pays respect to all forms of mid century design, folk and ethnic art, as well as current and future trends.

Each piece combines the hand cutting, folding and scoring of a wide range of papers and card that are further worked on to create patterned and textured surfaces. They are then used to build scenes in box frames which are often complex and consist of many layers. This process means that each item of work is truly individual with no two pieces the same.Influenced by the natural world each piece is manipulated to become an intriguing place, a glimpse into another world of fiction and fairytale.

IB Visual Art cont'

IB Diploma Visual Art

While I was teaching in China for 2 years my students and I produced a great amount of Visual Art. My year 12 students had to produce between 15-18 artworks that demonstrated refined indepth techniques and knowledge of at least two media. This body of work was measure against a set of world criteria set by the IB. Here are some of those works.

The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.

Visual art allows a high degree of adaptability to different cultural contexts. The emphasis is on creativity in the context of disciplined, practical research into the relevant genres. Visual art in the IB is designed to foster critical, reflective and informed practice, help students understand the dynamic and changing nature of the arts, explore the diversity of arts across time, place and cultures and express themselves with confidence and competence.

Burning matches

Burning matches on the pavement that a student "Tamara Shultz" from Alstonville High School is experimenting with for her HSC body of work. I took some photos and gave them a little post production in photoshop and voila! The first image reminds me of Tim Storriers work. Hope you enjoy.

Sunday afternoon painting

It was freezing outside, the wind was howling and I had adorned my wintery ugg boots, a thick wool jumper and made a peppermint tea.
I sat down and these a the little works that came out.

I love being warm in winter!

My friend Kiki

I have a beautiful friend by the name of Kiki, she's beautiful, upbeat, intelligent and thoughtful. I came across this photo of her from the Quiksilver pro that was in March 2010. I think it's fun and reflects how cool she is!
Love you, my friend Kiki :-)

Dopamine

Insight have recently launched a campaigne called Dopamine which consists of some simple amazing and very creative underwater shots. The black and white series use motorbikes, (upside down) bedroom furniture and naked girls as props – take this and mix it with with talented surfers and Insight have produced some mind blowing creative images.

Byron Bay Malibu Classic

It was a classic weekend full of amazing waves and even more amazingly inspirational surfing. Each day started of with lumps and bumps across the faces due to the westerly wind, which made the mornings feel like winter. But as the day moved along, out came the sun, the wind turned offshore and the log riders put on performances that had to be seen! Matty Aldridge won the old mal, with the most amazing hang ten in the most critical momment, right above the cungie rock. He made it look so effortless, along with shredders Brett Caller and Isaac Fields they dominated the 2 foot perfect reeling right handers at Wategoes.

I'm always drop jawed at the beauty and serence essence of the Byron landscape. Dolphins leaping out of the water, stingrays swimming underneath you, the sky cobalt blue and perfect log waves reeeling along.

Thankyou
